Q&A AI

Should I put bass in the live well or let them go to avoid spooking other bass?

Great question! Whether to put bass in a live well or release them immediately can depend on a few factors, including the specific circumstances of your fishing trip and the behavior of the bass in your area.

Using a Live Well:

  • Advantages:

    • Stress Reduction: Keeping bass in a live well can help reduce stress on the fish, especially if you're planning to tag them or measure them before release.
    • Observation: It allows you to observe the fish for any signs of injury or illness before releasing them back into the pond.
    • Controlled Environment: A live well provides a controlled environment where you can ensure the fish are healthy and ready to be released.
  • Disadvantages:

    • Spooking Other Fish: If you're fishing in a smaller area, the activity of catching and placing bass in a live well might spook other fish.
    • Time Consuming: It can be more time-consuming to handle each fish individually, which might not be ideal if you're in a competitive fishing scenario or if the bite is hot.

Immediate Release:

  • Advantages:

    • Minimize Disturbance: Releasing the bass immediately can minimize the disturbance in the fishing area, potentially keeping other bass from being spooked.
    • Natural Behavior: Immediate release allows the fish to return to its natural behavior more quickly, which can be beneficial for maintaining the ecosystem balance in your pond.
  • Disadvantages:

    • Risk of Injury: There's a higher risk of the fish being injured if it's not handled properly during the release process.
    • Less Control: You have less control over the fish's condition and might miss signs of stress or injury that could be addressed in a live well.

Based on Video Context:

From the videos by BamaBass, it seems like they take a very hands-on approach with their bass, often using controlled environments like aquariums and bait tanks to monitor and care for their fish. For example, in the video "Exploring the 5 Acre Pond in a Glass Bottom Kayak! (Glow Lights)," they discuss using a bait tank with anesthetic to calm the bass for tagging. This suggests that using a live well could be beneficial for ensuring the health and well-being of the bass before release.

Recommendation:

If you're concerned about spooking other bass, you might want to consider the size of your fishing area and the behavior of the bass. If you're in a larger pond or lake, using a live well might not significantly impact the other fish. However, if you're in a smaller, more confined area, immediate release could be the better option to keep the fishing spot active.

If you have any specific conditions or additional details about your fishing environment, feel free to share, and I can provide more tailored advice!

I Built a 5 Acre Pond 2 Years Ago - Then This Happened by BamaBass out here at the pond and I noticed a bunch of small fry hanging out right here at the surface and I thought there's no way that that could be little bass but I wanted to put an underwater camera in there just to double check because they were hanging out around the same lily pads that Johnny and June were spawning around about a month ago and I was blown away because as soon as I put the camera underwater the little school of bass I swam right up and for those of you that have been subscribed for a while you know we've been trying to have a bass spawn for years now our two original pet bass Bonnie and Clyde almost spawned once in our 300-gallon aquarium they attempted to in the backyard pond but we've never had a successful bass spawn until now but they're pretty vulnerable at this stage all the other Predators like bluegills will eat them and potentially even bass when they get bigger so now my question for you guys is what do you think we should do with them I could scoop a few of them out put them in the 300-gallon aquarium I could also put a few in the Wetland filter so Truman can have some buddies or I could just leave them here in Cedar Falls until they get a little bit bigger and then possibly release them into the 5 acre pond so let me know

Releasing Pet Bass into Backyard Pond!! by BamaBass out in a 55 gallon aquarium and they lived in it for about seven to eight months and we can tell that they were quickly outgrowing it especially Bonnie don't worry it had to go into defense mode there so that's when we decided to upgrade and we got him to 300 gallon aquarium they lived in it for about the same amount of time about eight months and that's when we decided we were really gonna have to let him go or build them this beautiful backyard plan and here's some of the highlights over the last few years well spit out it again the 3/8 ounce jig it's pretty wild all right I got some earthworms I'm gonna drop them in the pond and see if we can lure one of the catfish out but I'm also gonna drop them right in front of the bass just to see if they're interested in something other than a minute and in Diggins body right down there nothing gets gonna hit suggest look oh yeah oh really interesting to learn you got it huh that's pretty cool I thought it'd be taking a little bit longer than that to start and being able to feed them but I guess they already adjusted took her one day I think she's lazy she's always had food given directly to her and never had to chase it down oh yeah we've got a top water blow up on that one there's a

Exploring the 5 Acre Pond in a Glass Bottom Kayak! (Glow Lights) by BamaBass underwater green lights are about to come on so I've been feeding them a couple hundred a night and you can see the bait tank is doing good a bunch of lively shiners in there all the Goldfish are out let's go ahead and scoop some up for tonight once you see what they look like there's a good look at one right there but I've been feeding them a couple hundred a night and I have a feeling that'll go up once the bass start getting a little bit bigger so we had several people comment in the last video saying that we should just bypass the filter on the bait tank and just pump water directly out of the pond but I've got a second use for this bait tank that I hadn't told you about yet and here pretty soon we're going to start tagging all of the bass and one of the things I've been researching is a fish anesthetic and basically the way it works is it doesn't put the fish to sleep it just calms them down so you can imagine how hard it's going to be to tag a bass that's flopping around and won't stay still so you basically put them in something like a live well or in this case a bait tank and the anesthetic calms them down you tag them and then when you release them into the pond it immediately wears off and all the fish

Adding 10,000 Fish to the 5 Acre Pond! by BamaBass does sometimes happen and some of you may wonder why is that important well if you end up having a spring spawn and a fall spawn your largemouth bass population could get extremely crowded so after talking to the biologist I'm going to be watching closely to see if we have another spring spawn and if I start seeing multiple bass spawning and little fry everywhere then their recommendation is to take as many of those 2in bass out as possible to keep the pond from overcrowding check this out guys I was just walking right here along the Pond's Edge and this a little bitty guy was hiding up under that algae right there I was checking to see if it was one of the Ninja Turtles we just put in Cedar Falls I'd already looked at the bottom of their bellies most of them had orange bellies but that's pretty cool we got one of our first baby turtles right here in the pond I think I'm going to go put them in Cedar Falls so he can grow up with the Ninja Turtles so the golden shiners are smart and they've caught on to the fact that that if they hang out up here by the waterfall they don't get as much pressure from the fish because during the daytime the bass probably aren't going to swim up here but we're going to release this new baby turtle right here
