Tips for winter bass fishing in the Sacramento Delta?

Winter bass fishing in the Sacramento Delta can be a rewarding experience. Here are some tips to help you have a successful outing:

  1. Look for warmer areas: Just like in the videos, bass will seek out warmer areas during the winter. Look for areas that receive sunlight and have some protection from the wind. These areas can include shallow back pockets, back current areas, and areas with structure like submerged vegetation or fallen trees.

  2. Fish deeper water: In lakes, bass tend to move to deeper water during the winter. Look for areas that were productive during the pre-spawn in the spring and fish slightly deeper near those areas. Start your search around 15 to 20 feet and go as deep as 55 feet. Look for structure such as long lake points, humps, and ridges.

  3. Use your electronics: Your electronics can be a valuable tool during the winter. Learn how to interpret what you see on your fish finder. Look for changes in bottom composition, such as chunk rock or gravel, as well as contour changes. Use your electronics to watch your lure as it descends through the water column and observe how the bass react to it. Adjust your tactics accordingly.

  4. Make multiple casts: If you believe there are fish in an area and you've seen baitfish or bass on your graph, don't give up after just a few casts. Make multiple casts to entice a reaction bite. Sometimes, it takes getting one fish to bite to trigger a feeding frenzy among the school. So be persistent and give it a try.

  5. Dress warmly: The Sacramento Delta can get quite cold during the winter, so make sure to wear warm gear to keep yourself comfortable throughout the day. Staying warm will help you stay focused and make the most of your fishing trip.

Remember, winter bass fishing can be slower compared to other seasons, but the fish you do catch are likely to be larger. Good luck and tight lines!

7 Winter Bass Fishing Tips to Catch Stubborn Bass | How To | Bass Fishing by Bass Fishing Tips & Techniques by BassResource Those are areas that will warm up. If you get a quick little warming trend, it gets sunny out, those areas will warm up and the bass will go in there because baitfish, again, they're trying to survive the winter. So just a couple degrees difference is all they need. You know, so they'll move up in those areas, little back pockets out of the current to help survive the winter and those bass will follow right in. So look for those areas, those little back pockets and back current areas. Those things can be really productive for rivers. The next tip, for lakes, you want to look as a general rule, deeper water. You want to find areas that for example, if you knew an area that was really productive during the pre-spawn on this lake last spring, back up a little bit, go a little bit deeper near there and start there looking for fish. You want to start...I usually look around 15, 20 feet and go all the way down to 55 feet deep. And you're looking for structure, you're looking for long lake points, humps, ridges. Deeper water typically is more stable during the wintertime so the water temperatures don't fluctuate as much and it's a little bit warmer, because that surface temperature changes more rapidly as it gets colder during the wintertime. So those deeper temperatures are where the baitfish are going to be, and that's where the bass hang out chasing them. Tip number five, use your electronics to find those deep water areas.

Cold Water Bass - Tip #5 (WINTER FISHING) by Fishing with Nordbye every one fish win the Lord be and the fifth tip on cold water basin is to make multiple casts if you're in an area and you think there's fish there and you have confidence in it and you've seen the bait fish on your graph or you've seen the bass tuck to the bottom or out suspended make multiple casts at them don't just sit there make two casts and then leave because they're not biting sometimes the best won't bite until you you get a reaction out of one of them and then they'll all start feeding just this past week me and my friend were out of this lake and we came up to this point and I made about four or five casts and didn't get bit and I had confidence there were fish there because I saw bait fish on my graph as we went by just a little bit outside the point and on my sixth cast I got bit and then we proceeded to catch five more bass in a row off the point because we got that little school bass fired up feeding in frenzy mode and sometimes that's just what it takes you got to get one to bite and you catch a couple more in a row in the winter time these bats do like to school up a little bit so give that a try next time you're on the lake

Winter Bass Fishing Tips to Catch More Bass Now | How To | Bass Fishing by Bass Fishing Tips & Techniques by BassResource That's what we've been waiting all day for. Glenn: That's a good one. Keri: Thank you, dude. Got a little belly on him. Glenn: Yeah. That works. Keri: Got a little fish, drop shotting. Here you go, baby. Thank you for the play. That was fun. Slowly just saunters off. Glenn: One other tip I want to give you for bass fishing during the wintertime is use your electronics, really learn how to use your electronics. Get it off the auto mode and understand how to interpret what those electronics are telling you because a lot of times here, you're not fishing visible structure. You're not fishing docks or stumps that are sticking out of the water or lily pad fields, that sort of stuff where you see it. Here, you gotta use your underwater eyes to see that structure, so you need to be able to find and understand the difference between, say, chunk rock and gravel or a hard bottom and a soft bottom, besides just the contour changes. Really understand what kind of bottom that is. And then be able to pick out your lure. A lot of these presentations, such as jigging spoons, using blade baits, using drop shot, you know, you're sitting right over the spot in deeper water and you can use your electronics to watch that bait come down through the water column. And a lot of times, you can see the bass react to it and you can adjust your tactics. It's almost like sight fishing that you see in the springtime.
