Field Notes

This is a classic Hex-style dry fly, best fished when large mayflies are hatching and trout are feeding on the surface. Present it with a delicate cast and a dead-drift or slight twitch in calm water or during evening hatches.

Pros

  • Excellent imitation for large surface mayfly hatches
  • Works well for selective trout during evening rises
  • Simple, proven dry-fly profile

Cons

  • Limited to situations with active surface feeding
  • Can be difficult to see in low light without a good drift
