Description

The Elk Hair Caddis is one of the most popular dry flies of all time. It's a perfect imitation of an adult caddisfly, with color and size becoming the only variable to matching the hatch. It's buggy profile can also fool trout that are eating small stoneflies or terrestrial insects. For this reason, a black Elk Hair Caddis can be a great ant or beetle imitation on high alpine lakes. The elk hair is the secret ingredient to why this fly floats so well, allowing you to add a weighted dropper to cover fish eating sub-surface during a caddis hatch, or to fish a different type of nymph while covering water. Fishing caddis dries can be more forgiving throughout your drift since slight movement can imitate the often erratic movement of adult caddisflies.

Field Notes

A classic dry fly for matching adult caddis hatches on trout water. Fish it dead-drift on the surface, or use it as a dry-dropper indicator with a weighted nymph below when fish are feeding at multiple levels. It also works as a general terrestrial imitation on alpine lakes and other trout streams.

Pros

  • Excellent floating dry fly profile
  • Versatile for caddis, stonefly, and terrestrial imitations
  • Can support a dropper rig

Cons

  • Best when fish are looking up
  • May need floatant and careful presentation in rough water
