Description

The Griffith's Gnat is a classic dry fly designed to imitate clusters of small midges, or single adult midges. One of the few year-round dry files, the Griffith's Gnat can convince fish to eat it during midday hatches in the winter or anytime fish are subtly sipping during barely visible surface activity. This fly sits low in the surface film, making it less likely to spook fish in slower water. This quality can make it difficult to see on the surface, so we usually fish it 12-18" behind a more visible dry fly in a double dry setup.

Field Notes

A classic dry fly for imitating clusters of small midges or single adult midges. It excels during subtle surface feeding, especially midday winter hatches and other times fish are sipping quietly in slow water. Fish it low in the surface film, often as the trailing fly in a double-dry setup behind a more visible pattern.

Pros

  • Very effective year-round midge imitation
  • Rides low and natural in the surface film
  • Good choice for subtle surface sipping fish

Cons

  • Can be hard to see on the water
  • Less effective when fish are not feeding on tiny insects
