A Blue-Winged Olive half-dun pattern is meant to imitate an emerging mayfly during a hatch. Fish it on the surface film or just in the surface film when trout are keying on small olives in calm to lightly riffled water.

Pros

  • Excellent mayfly imitation during BWO hatches
  • Effective in the surface film for selective trout
  • Good choice for technical dry-fly situations

Cons

  • Can be hard to see in low light
  • Less effective when no olive hatch is present
