The Gardner River Spring Fly Box is hand-curated specifically for the conditions, hatches, and trout behavior you'll encounter on the Gardner from May through June. The Gardner is one of the most consistent early-season fisheries in the park — geothermal springs keep sections near Osprey Falls ice-free and producing midge hatches well before most other park rivers are even thinkable. This box is built around the Gardner's spring hatch calendar — midges, BWOs, and early stonefly nymphs on a freestone river that holds rainbow, brown, brook trout, and occasional Arctic Grayling. Every fly was chosen with fishing the slower pools and eddies during the midday midge hatch in mind, giving you exactly what you need to match what the fish are eating at this time of year. What's in the box: 36 flies total — 18 unique patterns, 2 of each — covering Zebra Midges, BWO dries, stonefly nymphs, Skwala dries, Hare's Ear nymphs, and Soft Hackle wets. No filler. No patterns that don't belong on this river in this season. Pro tip from the water: The Gardner near Mammoth is one of the only places in Yellowstone where you can regularly catch all seven of the park's game fish species.
