Hazy Fly Fishing

Field Notes

A Hare’s Ear CDC nymph is a versatile subsurface fly for imitating mayfly nymphs and other small aquatic insects. Fish it dead-drifted under a strike indicator or as part of a nymph rig in riffles, runs, and pocket water. The CDC adds a bit of natural movement and can help the fly breathe in slower currents.

Pros

  • Versatile mayfly-nymph imitation
  • CDC adds lifelike movement
  • Good choice for a wide range of trout water

Cons

  • Beadhead/nymph style can snag more easily on bottom
  • May be less visible in very dirty water
