A wake bait is meant to be retrieved just under or on the surface to create a visible wake and subtle disturbance. It works well around calm water, shallow cover, and low-light periods when bass are willing to chase a bait near the top.

Pros

  • Creates a strong surface wake without being overly aggressive
  • Good for covering water and triggering reaction strikes
  • Useful around shallow cover and open-water edges

Cons

  • Can be less effective in heavy wind or rough water
  • May not draw bites when bass want a deeper presentation
