Description

185mm made from Huon Pine this is a shallow running minnow. The timber was purchased in Tasmainia in early 2022 as a peice of recycled timber. Lagarostrobos franklinii is a species of conifer native to the wet Southwestern corner of Tasmania. The timber was widely used for manufacturing timber boats in days gone past. There still is a timber boat manufacturing business operating on the banks of the river in Huonville Tasmania, well worth taking a tour if you are in the area.

Field Notes

A shallow-running minnow like this is best for covering water over flats, points, and shallow cover where bass are feeding near the surface or just below it. Use a steady retrieve with occasional pauses or twitches to make the bait look like a wounded baitfish. It is a good choice when fish are active and you want a lure that tracks shallow without digging bottom.

Pros

  • Shallow-running profile is good for skinny water
  • Natural timber body can give a unique baitfish look
  • Versatile for steady retrieves and twitching

Cons

  • Limited depth range compared with deeper crankbaits
  • Wood construction may be more delicate than plastic
  • Best when fish are willing to chase
