Description

If you spend anytime on the Rogue River, you will encounter all variations of Otis Bugs, or multicolored space aged chenille bodies, rubber legs and bead heads. Steelhead love them. Flies like this tend to find their way into other fisheries where similar "steelhead stonefly nymphs" are fished. But it's always nice to give a nod back to the river where it started.

Field Notes

A stonefly nymph imitation for drifting through runs, riffles, and deeper seams where steelhead and trout feed subsurface. It is especially useful as part of a nymph rig or under an indicator when fish are holding near the bottom in moving water.

Pros

  • Strong stonefly profile for steelhead and trout
  • Bead head helps get down quickly
  • High-visibility colors can stand out in stained water

Cons

  • Not a good choice when fish are keyed to surface insects
  • Heavier presentation may snag in rocky bottoms
