Description

If you spend anytime on the Rogue River, you will encounter all variations of Otis Bugs, or multicolored space aged chenille bodies, rubber legs and bead heads. Steelhead love them. Flies like this tend to find their way into other fisheries where similar "steelhead stonefly nymphs" are fished. But it's always nice to give a nod back to the river where it started.

Field Notes

This is a stonefly nymph pattern designed to imitate larger aquatic insects that trout and steelhead eat subsurface. Fish it dead-drifted under an indicator, as part of a nymph rig, or swung in runs and seams where fish hold near the bottom.

Pros

  • Strong stonefly profile for trout and steelhead
  • Bead head helps it get down quickly
  • High-visibility colors can stand out in stained water

Cons

  • Bulkier profile may be less subtle in ultra-clear water
  • Best fished with proper depth control to reach feeding fish
