Field Notes

This is a midge emerger pattern meant to imitate an insect stuck in its pupal shuck. Fish it on a dead drift or with a very slight lift in slow to moderate water when trout are keying on small emerging insects. It is especially useful during midge hatches and in technical trout water.

Pros

  • Highly effective emerger imitation
  • Works year-round
  • Good for selective trout in technical water

Cons

  • Small fly can be hard to see and fish
  • Best when trout are actively feeding on midges
