Field Notes

These are scud patterns for trout feeding on freshwater crustaceans in streams and stillwaters. Fish them dead-drift under an indicator or as part of a nymph rig near the bottom, especially around weed beds, seams, and slower water where scuds and sowbugs live. Weighted versions help get down quickly; unweighted versions are useful in shallower water or when fish are feeding lightly.

Pros

  • Realistic crustacean profile for trout
  • Available weighted or unweighted
  • Good year-round food imitation

Cons

  • Small flies can be hard to see and handle
  • May require precise depth control to be effective
