Hazy Fly Fishing

Field Notes

A dry fly pattern for presenting on the surface during caddis activity or when trout are keying on adult insects. Fish it dead-drift or with a slight twitch in riffles, seams, and pocket water where trout expect drifting terrestrials and caddis adults.

Pros

  • Floats well as a surface fly
  • Good match for caddis and hopper-style presentations
  • Visible colors help track the drift

Cons

  • May need floatant and drying after repeated fish
  • Can be less effective when fish are feeding below the surface
