Field Notes

A small floating beetle-style plug for trout in rivers and streams. Cast it near banks, overhanging vegetation, and current seams, then retrieve slowly or with short twitches to imitate an insect struggling on the surface or just under it. Best when trout are feeding on terrestrials or looking up in calm to moderate water.

Pros

  • Very small and lightweight for finicky trout
  • Floating design works well around surface-feeding fish
  • Handmade balsa body can give a natural presentation

Cons

  • Single small hook may not be ideal in heavy cover
  • Limited diving depth for deeper fish
  • Surface-oriented presentation can be less effective when trout are holding deep
