Description

The Creeky Crawler is a true attractor pattern, designed to get the attention of fish without attempting to present an imitation of any particular insect. Its unique silhouette, tied on a barbless scud hook with the addition of rubber legs, will turn heads of curious fish but also passes as a small stonefly or mayfly when they are looking for something more specific. The tungsten bead and slender profile help this fly get down and that’s where it likes to be, tumbling around near the bottom.

Field Notes

This is an attractor nymph meant to fish near the bottom where trout are feeding on subsurface insects. It works well dead-drifted under an indicator, as part of a nymph rig, or in pocket water and riffles where a tungsten bead helps it get down quickly.

Pros

  • Attractor profile can draw strikes even when fish are not keyed on a specific hatch
  • Tungsten bead helps it sink fast
  • Barbless scud hook is suitable for trout fishing

Cons

  • Less exact imitation than a hatch-matching nymph
  • Best performance depends on getting it deep enough
