Field Notes

A beadhead nymph is typically fished subsurface as part of a trout rig, especially in riffles, runs, and pocket water. It works well dead-drifted under an indicator or as part of a Euro-nymphing setup when fish are feeding below the surface.

Pros

  • Beadhead helps the fly get down quickly
  • Effective imitation for subsurface trout feeding
  • Versatile in a wide range of water types

Cons

  • Not a surface fly
  • Can be less effective when fish are actively rising
