Description

Permit are easily spooked, even by your dime-sized crab fly splashing too much upon entry. RIO's Prize Fighter behaves more like a human diver who enters the water with a "rip" and minimal noise and splash. We were able to achieve this result thanks to our unique weight placement, as well as the fringe and legs, which help kick the fly over, breaking up the cavitation and quieting the entry. Its translucent legs and claws are not soft like silicone, so they hold their shape better when the fly is swimming. Mottled colors are great matches for most permit destinations, whether fishing over sand, grass, coral, or marl. The fly is available in both Heavyweight (~1.7 grams) and Lightweight (~1.3 grams) versions, all tied on the Gamakatsu SL12S Big Game size 2s, so you don't need to worry about hook strength/performance when you come tight to your prize.

Field Notes

Designed for permit fishing when fish are spooky and a quiet presentation matters. The fly is meant to enter with minimal splash and then swim naturally over sand, grass, coral, or marl. Use it on a controlled cast to permit in clear, shallow saltwater flats.

Pros

  • Quiet entry helps avoid spooking permit
  • Translucent legs and claws maintain shape while swimming
  • Mottled colors match common flats bottoms

Cons

  • Specialized for permit and saltwater flats fishing
  • Lightweight version may not cast as far in wind as heavier patterns
