Description

Bass love to eat dragonflies, both the nymphs and the adults. We've seen bass savagely grab them off the surface, or even launch into the air to grab one flying by. This is usually going strong in July to September. RIO's My Oh My Dragonfly is tied on the trusted Gamakatsu B10S hook and uses RIO Kahuna LT material for the abdomen. We tied SO MANY variations of this fly over several years before we were able to solve each design element to our liking and better yet, the bass' liking. We recommend fishing this the same way as we do the Foam Slice Frog. Cast it and let it sit for 7 to 10 seconds, then just twitch it to make the wings move. The strikes come either right when it first lands, or in the first 7 seconds, or after you twitch it. We don't typically pop it, or strip it back, we just recast

Field Notes

This is a surface dragonfly imitation for bass, designed to be cast near cover or open water where fish are feeding on insects. Let it sit after landing, then give it subtle twitches to move the wings and trigger strikes, especially during warm months when dragonflies are active.

Pros

  • Realistic dragonfly profile for surface-feeding bass
  • Easy dead-drift-and-twitch presentation
  • Strong topwater strike trigger

Cons

  • Can be less effective outside peak insect activity
  • Delicate fly can be damaged by repeated fish strikes
