Description

The RIO's Morrish Skate Rat was born out of the simple need for a large topwater pattern for big nasty fish. Think golden dorado, pike, peacock bass, and taimen, for starters. Due to its hook size, I wouldn't advocate using it for trout. There are lots of large flies and poppers that I like the thought of fishing...until I attempt to cast them. Un-castable concoctions have no place in my boxes nor in others. First off, we must be able to deliver; second, we must be able to deliver hour after hour and day after day. This fly is specifically designed to combine a large profile with castability. The no-wrap tail design also helps anglers keep the fly in the water where it belongs, as opposed to in the boat while you unwrap the tail!

Field Notes

This is a large topwater fly designed for aggressive predators and long casting sessions. Use it when fish are feeding near the surface, especially around structure or open water where a big profile can draw strikes. The no-wrap tail design helps keep it fishing cleanly through repeated casts.

Pros

  • Large surface profile for attracting big fish
  • Designed to be castable despite its size
  • No-wrap tail helps reduce fouling

Cons

  • Too large for trout
  • Best suited to bigger predator species rather than general freshwater fishing
