Description

Sooner or later fish wise up to anglers and their tricks. While Euro nymphs like Perdigons are deadly, largely due to their sink rates and the slow pace at which they bounce along the bottom, the more they are fished, the less effective they will become. The first thing that fish will wise up to is the profile of Euro nymphs, as they really don't resemble the insects that trout typically feed on. A huge, shiny, bulbous head and skinny little body with no legs is not nature's design. The Pugsly is another Euro/ Western hybrid. It is super heavy with brass eyes, a brass bead and lead wire, yet it is relatively lean and has a super buggy profile, and is especially well suited for fast water. It suspends at roughly a 45 degree angle making it look like an emerging bug and it will quickly get down in the most demanding conditions. This a go-to fast-water fly that imitates both mayflies and stoneflies, has a great profile, and a superior sink rate.

Field Notes

A heavy Euro/Western hybrid nymph designed to get down quickly in fast water and hold a natural, buggy profile. Fish it as part of a tight-line or Euro nymphing rig when trout are feeding near the bottom or on emerging insects. The 45-degree suspension makes it useful when you want the fly to look like an emerging bug while still staying deep in current.

Pros

  • Gets down quickly in demanding current
  • Buggy profile looks more natural than a plain Perdigon
  • Suspends at an emerging-bug angle
  • Good fast-water trout fly

Cons

  • Heavy fly can be less subtle in very shallow water
  • May be overkill in slow or ultra-clear conditions
