Description

In many ways, this fly was born out of my youth and learning to tie with Andre Puyans. Andy was the creator of the AP nymph, which was a great fly from a tying perspective as the tail, wing case and legs were all tied out of the same bunch of materials. The Anato-May has some shared qualities but was the first mayfly nymph that I know of to have a set of legs emanating from the juncture of the abdomen and the thorax, making it much more realistic in profile than standard nymphs where the legs all emanated from the thorax, head juncture. This is a great all-around mayfly pattern, like an updated PT with a super solid profile and a proven track record on the water. It renders really well in small sizes as well. This pattern is available for U.S. shipping only.

Field Notes

A realistic mayfly nymph pattern for trout feeding subsurface on mayfly imitations. Fish it dead-drifted under a dry fly, indicator, or as part of a nymph rig in riffles, runs, and seams. The olive and hare's ear colorways make it useful when matching common mayfly nymphs in a range of water conditions.

Pros

  • Highly realistic mayfly nymph profile
  • Versatile all-around trout pattern
  • Works well in small sizes

Cons

  • Not a good choice when fish are keyed on surface insects
  • May require precise dead-drift presentation
