Description

The Zirdle is a cross between a Girdle Bug and a Zonker, but we spiced ours up by knotting the legs, giving it a creepy-crawly vibe. This pattern can pass as a leech or a sculpin, but we feel it shines as a fleeing crawdad. Its weight gives it a nice neutral behavior, allowing the legs and bunny to move enticingly.

Field Notes

This fly is designed to imitate a fleeing crawdad, leech, or sculpin, making it a strong choice when trout are feeding on larger prey. Fish it with strips, pauses, or a swing to let the bunny fur and knotted legs breathe and pulse in the water.

Pros

  • Versatile baitfish/crayfish profile
  • Knotting adds extra movement and realism
  • Neutral behavior helps it hang in the strike zone

Cons

  • Bulkier fly can be harder to cast on lighter rods
  • May be too large or flashy for selective fish
