Description

Trout and smallmouth LOVE crayfish, and on some watersheds, the mini-lobster is their main food source. A good crayfish pattern needs to get down, hop and scamper up and around the rocks, and be able to jet backwards, with the claws swept forward like the naturals do when fleeing a predator. The Spreyfish, so named because it was initially designed to swing slowly at depth with a baby spey rod, has all these attributes and more. Tied on a weighted jig hook, it rides point up and skips around rocks without hanging up. Its tapered pheasant claws and hackle mimic the profile, color and movement of the real article, and it's deadly when popped along the bottom, stripped into the shallows, or swung in a gentle current. The smallies will be all over it, and you might just get thebiggest brown trout of your life. This pattern is available for US shipping only.

Field Notes

Use this crayfish-style streamer when trout or smallmouth are feeding on mini-lobsters and other bottom forage. It is designed to be swung slowly at depth, popped along the bottom, stripped into the shallows, or fished in a gentle current around rocks without hanging up as easily.

Pros

  • Weighted jig hook rides point up to reduce snags
  • Effective crayfish profile for trout and smallmouth
  • Can be swung, stripped, or worked along bottom

Cons

  • Best use is more specialized than a general streamer
  • Weighted design may be less ideal for very shallow, snaggy water
