Description

I have never been a huge "euro nympher." With my roots as a Northern California Tailwater Drift Boat Guide I have always believed in heavy weights, 3 flies, and a big indicator as the best way to catch trout. Simple flies tied on jig hooks just didn’t seem like something that would work on super selective tailwater trout. When I finally gave in and started messing around with Jig hooks and euro style flies midge patterns were the first I started tying and using on this new to me medium. The NF Midge was one of the first flies that I came up with to check the boxes on small dark “winter” midges and small dark baetis nymphs… This is the fly that I tie on when I say “well there are midges and baetis around…not sure which one they want yet” – sometimes I just keep it on and never find out what they want as I think they eat this fly for both.

A small tungsten nymph for trout when midges or baetis are present, especially in tailwaters and other selective trout water. It is designed for euro-style nymphing or as part of a multi-fly indicator rig when you need a compact fly that gets down quickly.

Pros

  • Tungsten bead helps it sink fast
  • Effective for small winter midges and baetis
  • Jig hook profile is good for euro nymphing

Cons

  • Very small profile can be hard to see
  • Best suited to technical trout fishing rather than general-purpose use
