Description

In Northern California we are blessed with a spring steelhead run and some tailwaters with large rainbow trout… match this with some of the biggest caddis hatches of the year in the spring and early summer and you have a great situation that shakes out to swing flies on trout spey and light switch rods. While most “Trout” Caddis patterns out there work just fine for this type of fishing they are not ideal for swinging and holding on to bigger trout and steelhead. So I started messing around with tying my caddis patterns on bonefish hooks. I figured bonefish hooks are built to tie small bodied flies and hold on to bigger hard fighting fish. So after many variations and small tweaks I came up with a pretty simple traditional caddis soft hackle build for swinging.

Field Notes

Designed for swinging on trout spey and light switch rods during large caddis hatches. Best in spring and early summer when targeting bigger trout and steelhead in tailwaters or other moving water. The soft hackle build and bonefish hook are meant to help the fly hold up to hard-fighting fish while swinging.

Pros

  • Well suited for swinging presentations
  • Built on a strong bonefish hook for bigger trout and steelhead
  • Matches large caddis hatches

Cons

  • Not ideal for dead-drift nymphing
  • Specialized for swing fishing rather than general-purpose caddis use
