Description

The white gill material used on RIO's Hangin' w/my Chromies is a great trigger for fish but works best when the water is clear. When algae is present, this material can take on a green tint and loses it's brightness. So to overcome this, you would switch to a fly that does not have this material but instead uses a white bead.

Field Notes

This is a beadhead nymph pattern meant to be fished subsurface, especially when trout are feeding on small aquatic insects. The description specifically notes it works best in clear water, where the bright white trigger material stands out; if algae or stain dulls that effect, a different fly with a white bead is recommended.

Pros

  • Strong trigger profile for clear-water trout fishing
  • Beadhead design helps it get down in the water column
  • Sold in a dozen for stocking multiple rigs

Cons

  • White trigger material can lose effectiveness when algae tints the water
  • Less suitable when water is off-color or heavily stained
