Description

An old school chironomid pattern, but with a modern twist! I like to keep my chironomids nice and skinny so here's my take on the Ice Cream Cone. By using a flat ribbing instead of a wire rib, we can really keep this patterns weight down. The Holographic ribbing also gives it a bit of depth and definition to make up for the missing obvious segmentation the wire typically brings. Sugar-free ice cream anyone? I know the fish sure like it

clear water, cold water, open water

Field Notes

A skinny chironomid-style nymph for stillwater and other trout waters where fish are feeding on small subsurface insects. Fish it under an indicator or on a slow retrieve when trout are keyed in on midge pupae or similar food sources. The beadhead helps it get down in the water column quickly.

Pros

  • Slim profile matches chironomid/midge pupae well
  • Beadhead helps with sink and depth control
  • Good stillwater trout pattern

Cons

  • Best when fish are feeding on small subsurface insects
  • Not a strong choice if fish want larger prey
