Description

Fly patterns are always evolving… New methods or ideas come up and it's what makes fly tying so much fun! Playing around with new methods keeps us excited, learning and creating better patterns. This pattern is one of those new ideas that came out in the chironomid tying world in the recent years and I'm absolutely loving!! Tying the anti-static bag in as a rib instead of used as the body gives some serious depth to the segmentations. It looks more realistic in my eyes and sometimes having those realistic patterns in your fly box that can make or break a day on the water targeting extra picky fish!

Field Notes

A realistic chironomid-style nymph for selective trout and stillwater fish. Fish it under an indicator, on a slow retrieve, or as part of a nymph rig when fish are keyed in on small subsurface insects. The segmented profile is meant to imitate a natural larva and help on picky days.

Pros

  • Highly realistic segmented chironomid profile
  • Good for picky fish in stillwater or nymphing situations
  • Beadhead helps it get down

Cons

  • Small profile can be hard to see and fish on some setups
  • Best when fish are feeding on tiny subsurface insects
