Description

Once summer is well underway there are more yellow jackets out foraging. Enough of them find their way onto the water for trout to opportunistically feed on them. Even though this is made from foam, rubber and deer, it's surprisingly realistic looking, enough to make you flinch when you see it close to your skin.

Fishing Profile

Field Notes

A realistic terrestrial dry fly meant to imitate a yellow jacket on the water. Fish it during summer hatches or anytime trout are opportunistically keying on fallen insects, especially along banks, under overhanging vegetation, and in calm pockets. Present it delicately on a dead drift or with slight twitching to suggest a struggling insect.

Pros

  • Highly realistic yellow jacket imitation
  • Buoyant foam and deer-hair style construction
  • Good summer trout attractor

Cons

  • Best when fish are looking up for terrestrials
  • Can be delicate to cast in wind due to lightweight build
