Description

The Impostor has its origins in the Scandinavian style Flashabou Flies—a massive sized Tube Fly, with nearly 100% of the silhouette being generated from Flashabou. These patterns taught me a lot about fly design, but the use of Material Dams (usually Bucktail Hollow Ties), Flashabou Blends, and Head Shape (Jerk Flies) are still a regular part of my tying. The Impostor is the culmination of all these ideas into one, with the use of material Dams and Flash blends for a tail, combined with an ultra-realistic silhouette/Color Combos generated by a stacked Synthetic Baitfish front half. This combination wrestles between reactionary and realistic, flashy yet natural, and lends itself to a fully synthetic fly that casts, swims, and most importantly fishes Great! The head comes in different formats depending on the circumstances, but a fuller profile Synthetic Bulkhead is my preference on the Heavier Guage PR320 for a near perfect head silhouette and water push, that fishes well for the greatest number of circumstances.

Field Notes

This is a streamer-style fly designed to imitate baitfish with a flashy yet natural profile. It is best fished on a fly line with strips, pauses, and swings to trigger reaction strikes, especially when trout or other predatory fish are feeding on baitfish. The synthetic bulkhead and flash materials suggest it works well when you want more silhouette and water push.

Pros

  • Flashy baitfish profile with realistic silhouette
  • Casts and swims well according to the listing
  • Versatile for multiple water conditions and presentations

Cons

  • Likely requires active stripping to fish effectively
  • May be too bulky for delicate presentations
