Description

The Armed Critter is the result of several failed attempts at making a soft-landing redfish fly imitating a crab for the very skittish redfish of Tampa Bay. In the end, a miniaturized strong arm Merkin claw with a more slender body proved highly effective. This same fly makes an excellent bonefish and permit fly too.

Field Notes

This is a saltwater crab imitation designed for sight-fishing to skittish redfish, bonefish, and permit. It is best presented with a soft landing near flats, mangroves, or sandy bottom structure, then allowed to settle and be stripped or twitched subtly to suggest a crab.

Pros

  • Strong crab profile for selective saltwater fish
  • Soft-landing design helps avoid spooking fish
  • Versatile for redfish, bonefish, and permit

Cons

  • Not ideal for freshwater applications
  • May require accurate casting to sighted fish
