PMD Thorax

When trout are peacefully sipping mayflies in the fading evening light, there’s a good chance that a PMD would get the job done. Sometimes a PMD hatch requires a little finesse and more delicate fly imitations. When that’s the case, the PMD Thorax is the perfect choice! It’s thin, with upright wings and a translucent tail that creates a deadly combination trout cannot ignore. This pattern is great for fishing slower pools or calm back eddies where fish lazily sip mayflies gently drying their wings. If this fly sinks a little, even just an inch or two under the water, that’s ok! Trout will still realize that it’s a PMD and continue to feed on it, so don’t give up on a drift even if it seems like all is lost. While anglers envision violent thrashing on the surface as big trout inhale our dry flies, more often than not the takes are gentle and delicate. Especially when it comes to mayflies, fish feel as though there is no rush since mayflies take some time to dry their wings and make for easy targets while that’s happening. Slow water is a perfect spot to fish the PMD Thorax when fish cruise around looking for that easy meal when PMDs are hatching.
