The Fly Crate

Field Notes

A dry fly for fishing trout when insects are hatching and fish are feeding on the surface. Best presented with a drag-free drift in riffles, seams, and pocket water where trout are looking up for mayflies or yellow sallies.

Pros

  • Floats on the surface for visible presentations.
  • Good match for trout during summer insect activity.
  • Simple dead-drift technique makes it easy to fish.

Cons

  • Can be less effective when fish are feeding subsurface.
  • May require frequent floatant or drying after repeated drifts.
