Field Notes

Artificial fly nymphs are used to imitate aquatic insects and other small forage below the surface. Fish them on a fly line or as part of a nymphing setup in moving water, dead-drifted near the bottom or along seams and drop-offs.

Pros

  • Natural insect imitation
  • Effective for dead-drift presentations
  • Works well in rivers and streams

Cons

  • Requires fly-fishing gear and presentation skill
  • Small profile can be hard to see and cast
