rainysflies

Field Notes

Use this as a surface fly for aggressive fish feeding near the top. It is best worked with short strips and pauses to make the popper push water and draw strikes, especially around shoreline cover, flats, or bait activity. The popper profile also makes it a good choice when fish are keyed on larger prey and will attack on the surface.

Pros

  • Strong surface commotion to trigger reaction strikes
  • Good visibility in multiple color patterns
  • Useful for both bass and saltwater applications

Cons

  • Can be less effective in calm, highly pressured conditions
  • Surface flies are more dependent on fish being willing to rise
