Field Notes

Dry maize is a classic carp particle bait used to create a feeding area or to hook fish when prepared correctly. It is best soaked and cooked before use, then introduced in small amounts over a spot or mixed into groundbait and spod mixes. Works well on the bottom in stillwaters, canals, and rivers where carp are feeding on particles.

Pros

  • Cheap and effective particle bait for carp
  • Can be used loose-fed or as hookbait after preparation
  • Good for building a long-lasting feed area

Cons

  • Must be soaked/cooked before safe use
  • Can be less selective than boilies
  • Not ideal if overfed in very cold water
