Description

THE FLY The mysterious lady, whose identity the salmon world may never uncover, has lent her name to one of the very best classic flies from the Scottish Spey. Its discretion and the combination of the red breast feather from the golden pheasant together with the grey heron hackle is what makes it so special. A discrete, soft-swimming fly can work miracles on tricky salmon. We prefer to fish this in clear water on a cloudy day and in not-too-big sizes. The little mallard brown hair wing steers the fly, and the hackles provide great movement. We think this is one of the "forgotten" patterns that deserves to be fished more often. A classic soft-swimming Spey fly for salmon, especially in clear water and on cloudy days. Fish it on a swing or slow retrieve where its translucent profile and mobile hackle can breathe in the current. Best used in smaller sizes when fish are pressured or conditions are tricky.

Pros

  • Soft, lively movement in the water
  • Translucent profile can look natural in clear water
  • Classic salmon pattern with good swing presentation

Cons

  • Can be subtle and less visible in dirty water
  • May be less effective when fish want a larger, louder profile
