Description

As anglers are turning more and more to catch and release on our reservoirs, our trout are definitely becoming wiser to frits and marabou! This Bibio Popper Hopper is a great pattern to use on the buoyant end of a washing line when the takes dry up with blobs and boobies. It can also be fish as a dry fly in windy conditions to ensure your flies are sitting high in the surface. Tied with a thorax cover of foam, as well as the popper head, this fly hangs perfectly in the surface rather than on it, giving more positive takes and hook ups. The Jenkins' Bibio Popper Hopper is a great pattern to use all around the UK, especially for brown trout or when fish are feeding on Hawthorn, Heather Fly or Buzzer. Tied on a Fulling Mill Barbless hook with black and fluorescent red Seal X Dubbing.

Field Notes

Use this as a buoyant dry fly or the floating end of a washing-line setup when trout are keying on surface insects. It is especially useful in windy conditions because the foam popper head helps it sit high and stay visible on the surface. Best when fish are feeding on terrestrials or other small surface food like hawthorn, heather fly, or buzzer patterns.

Pros

  • Floats well and sits high in the surface film
  • Good visibility and positive takes
  • Barbless hook supports catch-and-release fishing

Cons

  • Can be less effective once fish stop feeding near the surface
  • May be too buoyant or conspicuous in very calm, picky conditions
