Description

This classic pattern was designed by innovative tier Gary LaFontaine. The Emergent is the first pattern to mimic the hesitation of the escaping natural at the surface film. The over body of loosely tied antron actually traps air just like the natural. Fish will key on this vulnerable stage of an insects life, and air bubbles is one thing they look for. You can have some memorable days just fishing this pattern. Pupa is the stage between larva and adult.

Field Notes

This emerger-style fly is designed to imitate an insect transitioning through the surface film, making it effective when trout are feeding on emerging insects. Fish it with a dead drift or a subtle swing in slow to moderate water, especially during hatches or when fish are selectively taking emergers.

Pros

  • Realistic emerger profile in the surface film
  • Good match for selective trout during hatches
  • Light, buggy silhouette can trigger takes

Cons

  • Can be less effective when fish are not keying on emergers
  • Delicate pattern may require careful presentation
