Description

Upavon Chadwick's 477 Substitute is as close as currently available to the original Chadwick's 477 wool yarn used by Frank Sawyer in his definitive Pheasant Tail Nymph — the warm, muted pinkish-brown tone that Sawyer used for the body of his original pattern and that no standard dubbing or yarn quite replicates. Use it for Sawyer-style PTN bodies and thoraxes, for traditional North Country spider bodies where the subtle pink-brown hue is part of the pattern's identity, and anywhere else the original Chadwick's shade is specified and you've been making do with a compromise.

Field Notes

Fly tying material used to build classic Pheasant Tail Nymph bodies and thoraxes, especially when you want the traditional Chadwick's 477 pinkish-brown tone. Also useful for North Country spider bodies and other traditional wet or nymph patterns where subtle wool yarn segmentation matters.

Pros

  • Authentic substitute for the classic Chadwick's 477 shade
  • Useful for traditional nymph and spider patterns
  • Fine yarn texture works well for segmented bodies

Cons

  • Only a tying material, not a finished fly
  • Color matching can still vary slightly from the original vintage material
