Field Notes

Use this dry fly when trout are keying on flying ants, especially during terrestrial falls near grassy banks, overhanging trees, or windy conditions that blow insects onto the water. It is best presented with a delicate dead-drift or slight twitch on the surface to imitate a struggling ant.

Pros

  • Effective imitation for trout feeding on ants
  • Small terrestrial pattern that can trigger selective fish
  • Good box staple for summer hatches and falls

Cons

  • Very specific hatch match, so it can be less useful outside ant falls
  • Small fly can be hard to see and cast in wind
