Field Notes

A beadhead nymph pattern meant to be fished subsurface as part of a nymphing setup. It is a good choice when trout or Great Lakes fish are feeding on drifting insects and you want a fly that gets down quickly and imitates a small aquatic food source.

Pros

  • Beadhead helps it sink quickly
  • Versatile subsurface trout pattern
  • Useful in Great Lakes and nymphing situations

Cons

  • Not a surface fly
  • Can be less effective if fish are keyed on larger prey or very specific hatches
