Copper John Yellow

Field Notes

Use Copper John nymphs to imitate drifting or subsurface mayfly/stonefly larvae along the bottom. Cast upstream and let the fly sink, then maintain a slow drift with occasional short twitches to keep it moving naturally.

Pros

  • Proven general-purpose nymph pattern
  • Effective in subsurface/near-bottom currents
  • Good for trout when insects are present

Cons

  • Not a surface pattern—requires subsurface presentation
  • May need weight/leader adjustment for faster water
